BOXING/KICKBOXING

Kickboxing and boxing are the main base of everything we teach at AFA. In order to be proficient in the Filipino Martial Arts a strong boxing base is needed as good stances, footwork and striking is essential, which is what a good Boxing/Kickboxing program teaches. Both Boxing and Kickboxing are also great cardio workouts and will improve overall fitness and strength and conditioning.

Solo Baston/Single Stick

A heavy emphasis is placed on combative stick fighting techniques, the strikes and defenses which actually work in sparring. The Amara (striking templates) are fantastic for developing unpredictability in your striking and great for solo practice. There are also many two person flow drills which are excellent for developing quick reflexes, sensitivity and hand-eye co-ordination

Panantukan/Pananjakman

Panantukan also known as blade boxing or dirty boxing is the empty hand portion of Eskrima/Kali with many of its techniques coming from the movements of the blade. It is a sophisticated system that is both functional and interesting to train. There are some unique training methods like focus y daga (focus pad and dagger) which really help develop correct punching technique and increase hand and foot speed. Pananjakman is the kicking art which emphasises low line kicks and stomping techniques.

Knife (Baraw)

We train both knife fighting and knife defence. In this day and age training with the knife is an essential element and is something the Filipino Martial Arts specialise in. In our knife defence program we look at many different areas as well as scenario based training, the draw, concealment etc. There are also many sensitivity drills to develop quick reflexes and flow as well as disarms, locks and chokes.

Dumog (Filipino Grappling)

Our grappling module looks at stick grappling, knife grappling and standing empty hand grappling as well as clinch work. It is vastly different to grapple with a weapon involved than it is with empty hands and the training methods here will work on those differences.

Doble Baston/Double Stick

Double stick training is excellent for developing cognitive skills and improving your non dominant hand to a much higher level. It also builds many attributes that help improve other areas like body mechanics, hand eye coordination, and flow.  Our double stick training is broken into 3 areas, Coordination drills, flow drills and combat techniques.

Stick & Dagger/Sword & Dagger

There is a vast difference between stick & dagger and sword & dagger due to the characteristics of the weapons. With the stick & dagger we are able to trap and we have many techniques that develop weapon trapping to a high level whereas with the sword & dagger trapping would not be possible and the margin for error is minimal. Both of these double weapons develop high levels of zoning and use of the live hand.

Sibat (Filipino Staff)

The Sibat enhances body mechanics and teaches the principle of dos manos (both hands on). We use various staff techniques from systems such as Tapado, Sciensa and Taw-Taw as well as throws and trips with the weapon. We also employ sibat sparring and mixed weapon sparring.

Espada (Sword)

It is important to understand the characteristics of the weapon, and the sword is very different from the stick in the way that you defend using blocking and parrying and the motions of attack using lethal entry sword cuts. We train the correct use of the sword in the largo mano (long range) and medio mano (medium range).

Specialised Weapons (Axe, Kerambit, whip)

The axe has unique striking templates. You are also able to disarm, lock and throw using this weapon. The kerambit  or the Filipino ring knife is a lethal weapon and can be used for limb hooking, ripping and slashing. The whip will vastly enhance correct body mechanics and the ability to contract and relax when striking. These are advanced weapons within the Warriors Eskrima system.

Jun Fan Gung Fu/Jeet Kune Do

This was the system and concepts that Bruce Lee developed. It works on many concepts like economy of motion, directness while working through all the ranges from punching, kicking, trapping and grappling. We borrow sensitivity drills, trapping drills and pad drills to help enhance our skills as martial artists. The methods taught come from Guro Dan Inosanto.

Maphilindo Silat

Silat is generally an Indonesian martial art but with systems also found in the Philippines and Malaysia. Maphilindo Silat is a combination of many different systems from all these areas and was created by Guro Dan Inosanto. We incorporate sweeping, tripping and throwing techniques from this art.
